ChatGPT-5 is here; What you need to know
The fifth generation of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence engine – the one that many have been awaiting for years – ChatGPT-5, has finally landed in your browser or app.
According to the company, the product is their “smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, with thinking built in”.
When it was introduced last week, it became the default for all users – paid users would have it turned on automatically and be able to change it to previous models manually; free users would just get the new model. But users revolted because they had built relationships with previous models. Some said ChatGPT was more empathetic.
So the company reversed course a bit, giving more access to ChatGPT-4o.
The way the product is being rolled out also reminded me of the biggest reason that the paid version is better than the free version. (Although I regularly use the Pro/paid model, I sometimes go back to the free model to keep up-to-date on the differences.)
This week, I asked the free version of ChatGPT to outline the differences for me, and it gave me a surprise response:
“Free version gives you access to GPT-3.5; the Paid Version (ChatGPT Plus) gives you access to GPT-4”
That’s incorrect!!! – what the industry calls a “hallucination” because it is far out of date; so I asked it to “please update that info to reflect the current status of ChatGPT 5”, to which it responded,…
“As of now, ChatGPT-5 has not been released, but if it does get released in the future, here’s how the landscape might evolve.”
Then it continued to speculate what ChatGPT-5 would do.
Of course, knowing I just encountered a hallucination, I asked the paid version, “Free ChatGPT just told me that GPT-5 hasn't been released. Is that true? Why did it tell me that?”
With its usual positive attitude, it responded:
“You're absolutely right—when Free ChatGPT said that GPT‑5 hasn't been released, that information was outdated or based on earlier knowledge. In reality, GPT‑5 was officially released on August 7, 2025, and has since become the default model for all ChatGPT users, including those using the free tier.”

We’ll talk about hallucinations in more depth in a later issue. In the meantime, this is a good example that again provokes the question related to all the people who are blindly using AI to answer all their questions and generate communications that they can share as their own… Would I be better off starting with AI (ChatGPT or others) – or am I better off going to the source? Sometimes the answer might not be what you expect.
