The importance of cumulative effect — and government programs

Last week, I had the opportunity to talk with Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania. He had just announced a new agreement with NVIDIA in which NVIDIA would work with Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh on two centers of excellence and research for AI & Robotics, one at each university. The universities’ campuses (campi?) snuggle against one another in Pittsburgh; and it is fast becoming the epicenter for AI, especially B2B and healthcare applications.

As we talked, it became apparent that to Governor Shapiro, this was not a one-off political announcement — he is truly focusing on having Pennsylvania lead the country in AI development and adoption.

In his view, a push to get all residents high speed access to the Internet is a critical part of it and perhaps the foundation. Leveraging federal funds, last year, he focused $1.16 on creating the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority and expanding consequencial access to 260,000 individuals who don’t currently have fast internet. In addition to creating a new way for them to increase their education and career opportunities, it also helps create a ready-made AI workforce within the commonwealth.

Shapiro is leading by example, setting up state employees to take better advantage of I and even working directly with OpenAI on beta testing.

He has also set up a center at Penn State University to work on ethical artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is the type of AI that has most politicians up in arms. Instead of worrying about it, he is setting up high value teams within his jurisdiction to do something about it.

I wrote about his inititiative with Pitt and CMU here, and how these universities are working with the governor and NVIDIA to turn Pittsburgh into the center of t

The iPhone feature you always wished for

The most impactful new feature of your upgraded iPhone is one you didn't expect…

The latest upgrade of iOS for your iPhone (iOS 18) is full of features, both related to AI (coming in an update) and other types of features.

But there's one that stands out above the rest — it turns your notes application into a dictation device.

Imaging being able to click a button and dictate your note so it's ready for you later — without having to add a new app.

Simply open Notes; then click the microphone icon in the bottom right corner. Start talking and your words will start showing up on your screen.

We've been experimenting with this new feature and it has been perfect in the dictation (although we anticipate more mistakes as we go).

Applications are endless —

  • jot a to-do list while you're traveling

  • quote a book you're listening to while at the gym

  • turn it on during a short face-to-face meeting to capture what went on during the meeting.

Remember, it's not smart enough to know who is talking; but it will get the words.

Want to know how to make it really easy to start dictating when your phone is locked? Stay tuned for tomorrow's tip. And we'll have additional easy tips in upcoming days as well.

In my “Time Management in the Age of A.I.” workshop, you’ll learn how you can leverage some of the most popular existing non-AI frameworks with AI of various types to gain you hours every week and make it easier to accomplish your most important tasks.

The objective: for each participant to end up with their own customized framework to manage their time easier and make every day more successful.

The results have been overwhelming:

  • “You hit the nail on the head”

  • “The time flew by — so much info. When I noticed the time, the session was almost over”

It’s amazing how far your team can go when they learn to combine popular traditional time management frameworks with the latest techniques including using A.I. judiciously.
