OpenAI intrigue - impact on how Generative A.I. grows
The recent 5-day melodrama in which OpenAI’s CEO was fired, hired by Microsoft and re-hired by OpenAI shows how quickly the A.I. trajectory can change – and demonstrates the high stakes of being A.I. aware.
CEO, Sam Altman, disagreed with the company’s board about the balance between commerce from the technology and the need for safety; so he was ousted. The company’s top investor, Microsoft, got involved; and the end result was a coup – Altman reinstated and board members out.
It’s likely that similar critical conversations are happening in board rooms across the world because each company needs to resolve how they will deal with issues that have never before been so critical for corporate success – from safety to data privacy to human relations to commercial viability.
Just because a company is not an “A.I. company” doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to have these conversations. It may be even more important, because the issues are more likely to sneak up on boards and executives who are not living within the industry.
Gergely Orosz, The Pragmatic Engineer, has published a detailed account and analysis that reveals mistakes at OpenAI at the leadership and board level as well as how A.I. and incentives can make things very difficult for lots of organizations.
As Ian Gott has reminded us, A.I. is not coming; it’s here – it’s just that it hasn’t arrived to all of us at the same time. And if we wait until it’s upon us to make corporate decisions, it’s probably too late.
